How to create an SMS QR code
Use a number capable of receiving SMS and write a short template. The draft should explain its purpose without inserting personal details that do not apply to every scanner.
- Enter the destination number in international format when possible, including a country code such as +1 or +41. This keeps it unambiguous for devices from other countries.
- Optionally add a message, keyword, or reference. Leave space for a name, order number, equipment identifier, or other information supplied by the sender.
- Scan the preview with iOS and Android. Check the recipient and text in the messaging app without accidentally sending the test message.
- Download the PNG and test the code at the intended print size, lighting level, and viewing distance.
The SMSTO format and an example
The generator uses the widely recognized SMSTO format. The phone number follows SMSTO:, then a colon separates it from the optional message. An encoded payload can look like this:
SMSTO:+12025550123:REGISTER Saturday workshop
The message is stored as plain text inside the QR code. Even with an empty message, the number remains the target of the SMS draft. Special characters and non-ASCII text work, but use more QR capacity and may reduce the character count available in one carrier SMS segment. The QR code itself triggers neither sending nor charges.
When an SMS QR code is useful
Events can prepare a fixed keyword for confirmations or cancellations. Service labels on equipment can open a message containing a device identifier, while stores can simplify callback or availability requests. On posters, the code offers a clear contact route for people who do not want to install an app or open a web form.
Explain who receives the message and whether normal SMS charges may apply. Promotional campaigns require appropriate consent and clear expectations. Do not use a template that requests sensitive information. A website or email is usually more suitable for long explanations than an SMS split across several billed segments.
Device behavior and limitations
iPhones and many Android devices recognize SMSTO directly, but camera and scanner apps can differ. Some open the draft immediately, while others display a security prompt first. A dual-SIM device may also ask which line should send the message. None of these paths should send it without confirmation.
The code is static: its number and template cannot change after printing. Long text produces a denser QR pattern and may be sent as several chargeable SMS segments. Check the destination number regularly and replace the code when the number, keyword, or underlying process is no longer valid.
Privacy: The phone number and message are encoded only in your browser. OnlineToolkit.ch does not receive or store them and does not send an SMS.
