How to create a QR code for a phone number
Use a complete international number whenever possible. This keeps the code useful for people whose mobile plan is registered in another country.
- Enter the telephone number. Include a plus sign, country code, area code, and subscriber number, for example +12025550123.
- Scan the live preview with at least one iPhone and one Android device. Confirm that the dialer displays the number you expect.
- Download the QR code as a PNG and place it beside a clear call to action such as “Call now,” with the number also printed as text.
- Test the finished print from a realistic distance. Allow sufficient size, strong contrast, and an empty margin around the QR code.
The tel URI, phone number, and an example
Phone QR codes use the standard tel scheme. Their content consists of tel: followed by the telephone number. A compact international entry looks like this:
tel:+12025550123
The scanner recognizes a telephone action and passes the number to a suitable application. Spaces and parentheses work on many devices, but an international form with a plus sign and digits is generally the most reliable. The QR code contains no contact name, business hours, or note about the call. Put that context visibly beside the code.
Phone QR codes for direct customer contact
On call-button posters and vehicle graphics, a phone QR code shortens the route to a conversation. Service hotlines can place one on equipment, packaging, or maintenance documents so customers reach the correct number without typing errors. It complements printed contact details on business cards and makes an immediate call to sales or support convenient at trade show booths.
Always show the number as readable text as well. That helps anyone who does not want to scan and makes the destination clear in advance. A hotline should state its hours, possible charges, and responsible department near the code. For several purposes, separate and clearly labeled codes are better than one unexplained number.
Dialers, device limitations, and static numbers
iOS and Android usually open the dialer or first show a confirmation. They do not place the call automatically for safety reasons. Tablets without cellular calling, desktop computers, and some scanner apps may only display the number or offer to copy it. Dual-SIM devices can also ask which line to use.
The code is static: if the hotline changes, a new QR code must be printed. Show clear warnings for premium-rate, international, or temporary numbers. Emergency numbers are unsuitable for unverified promotional material. Scan the final code regularly and make sure that the displayed number is genuinely reachable.
